Filmmaking / Directing : I bring my kid on set. This is why. by Jim Ross

Jim Ross

I bring my kid on set. This is why.

My ten year old daughter has been wanting to join me on set for years. At 3 years young she emptied my pelican case and climbed inside trying to stow away on a film trip.

Now that she is older I take her with me. Now, of course I don't take her on ad agency gigs and features but if I'm working on a passion project on the weekend? Working with indie filmmakers? You can be certain she is there.

And she is there by HER choice not mine. I don't force my kid to come. It's her election to do it. Being divorced I don't have her every weekend. So I know she wants to come because when she is with her mom and I'm on set without her? She's furious, LOL!

I figure by the time she is 18 she'll be as experienced as someone in the business ten years older. Imagine that! Being a decade ahead of others her age! And knowing all facets, not just cinematography.

Even now I have filmmaking friends who ask if she is coming because everyone is addicted to the little girl with the big heart and passion for production.

Think about that.

Karen "Kay" Ross

Hey Jim, this is Karen from the Stage 32 team. I just wanted to let you know I moved your post from Anything Goes to Filmmaking / Directing, as it fits much better there. Let me know if you have any questions, and all the best to you!

Doug Nelson

I assume that's her behind the slate - a wonderful thing you do for her in so many ways. I fondly remember my first acting gig as a 7 year old in a GE lighting Co training film.

Pete Whiting

I've never been on a film set :(
