Composing : Composer goals! by Joanna Karselis

Composer goals!

So composers, this is a little bit late in the month, but what are we all hoping to achieve this year? What goals do we have? What skills or opportunities do you need to accomplish those goals? Is there anything we as a community can do to help you achieve them?

Joanna Karselis

I'll go first- for a few years I've wanted to score two features in a year, and this is the year it's finally going to happen! I've booked two features for the first half of this year, so the next goal is completing them to the highest possible standard.

I also want to release my first classical crossover EP, keep developing relationships with various music libraries, and finally finish a big trailer music album I've been messing around with in between other jobs.

On the technical side of things, I aim to get more into the habit of practicing my various instruments more regularly. And I want to keep learning more about mixing, which is my weak point, so I need to keep reading, going to learning sessions, and watching videos about that.

Joel Irwin

I am beginning to break out of my ongoing dependence on acoustic instrumentation. Back in Nov, I delved part of the way in my last score for the film, "The Players". Still used some acoustic - piano, accordion, bass, and drum set. The synths I had at the time all used a single tone associated with each key.

I am going to learn more complex sounds this year by working with instruments whose keys map onto multiple tones/frequencies and also map to multiple segments/notes/instruments. (Hence my previous post about my purchase of Native Instruments Komplete 13 Ultimate). I am still 'weak' using both acoustic and cinematic percussion along with other sounds used in the 'sound design' of a score.

Shanika Freeman

Lately, I've been doing a lot of sound design and screenwriting work but not a lot of music composing. So, my goal is to get back into it. I just secured a scoring gig for a feature film, and I will be scoring and designing my own audio drama this year.

I also plan on finally releasing my narrative science fiction EP filled with ambient and space soundscapes. :)

Overall, I just want to be better than before. I want to learn and grow as a composer.

My word for this month is 'consistency' so my goal is to be and stay consistent.

Joel Irwin brilliant! That's a great goal. Is there anything we in this community who are more experienced with non-acoustic instrumentation can do to help you at all?

Joanna Karselis

Shanika Freeman top work, congratulations on the feature!! That's a great way to start the year. Sounds like you'll be very busy with all those projects, excellent stuff.

If you want to be consistency buddies let me know, I need to be consistent with my instrumental practice too and sometimes some accountability can help.

Martijn de Man

Hi all, just joined Stage 32 pleased to meet you. Congrats Joanna Karselis, that's awesome! Doing a few documentaries myself this year and hoping to do evolve from short films to a feature this year.

Joanna Karselis

Welcome Martijn! Brilliant, evolving to features is a great goal. Let us know by posting in the lounge if the community can help you at all, at any point.
