Mmm... before I read this, may I ask - do you create beatsheets for your spec before you dive in? I've never written a spec, but I use beatsheets for all my original scripts.

Michael Adedeji

@Karen "Kay" Ross . I haven't done a beatsheet before, in fact I hear of them but don't particularly know about them. I outlined a series of dialogue for the cold open on paper anf then on a single sheet of paper I laid out moments and connecting ideas in a tree and constructed scenes around them. So that was my weird outline. For my original scripts I create breakdowns and line by line outlines of scenes, dialogue, and themes and interlock them within 5 to 20 pages. That's if I decide to outline.

choose the best scene you've got and make a 3 min short movie. it will enlight you about all the different steps of a movie making endeavour (including how to deal w bad screenplay in the shooting and post editing...

in my experience in the university all writers get fatal frustation when image on screen does not make for image from imagination...

so, your short is not to get an oscar, but to expand perception to be ready to talk to producers and other pro people to REAL make your screenplay to movie.

hope this quest get you where you want to be.
