In Defense of the Short Film - for Distribution

Found this incredible write-up on Variety about how streamers and cinemas are making Oscar-winning shorts available for screening - and they are making more than some indie features!

"In recent years, as a rise in on-demand, at-home viewing points the way for the industry’s future, shorts are getting more exposure than ever. Streamers now embrace them: You can watch last year’s winner, “Two Distant Strangers,” on Netflix. And once the nominations are announced, audiences pay good money to see them on the big screen. At the time of this writing, just days before the Academy Awards, the box office for the live-action shorts program has surpassed $1.5 million — that’s more than putative Oscar front-runners “CODA” (exclusive to Apple TV Plus) and “The Power of the Dog” (a Netflix original)."

What do you think? Where else are you seeing a platform for short films?

Seriously, this gives me so much hope! Who else is producing a short film this year?

Debbie Elicksen

There is so much more opportunity now and technology has given us so many new ways to tell a great story. Great times for creatives.

I love this article thank you for sharing.

Totally doable to get short films distributed and make a few bucks. I've done so with three projects. But, one must be realistic to the fact the films that go on to be oscar runners or are on Netflix are much bigger productions with bigger talent behind them. Which is not realistic for most indie filmmakers. My two cents :)

Michele Traina

Stephen what avenue did you take for your short film distribution?

Debbie Elicksen

Shorts seem like a great way to test a concept.
