Hello Stage 32 Community, I hope your days are long, and nights are pleasant. I had some thoughts to share about what I feel is the line between thousands of dollars of gear, a minimal setup, and straight up organic creativity. Currently I am working on a true crime/supernatural documentary called Death Is With Me, and the director gave me an interesting hybrid idea of the score, "Nordic folk music + Old Disney style lush orchestration + abstract insanity" My studio is very minimal, and don't have thousands of dollars worth of gear, but I did sink my money into software, and plugins. If you have a great sense of what sounds best married with the visual media, then you could do A LOT with just one plugin. I am able to achieve most of the Nordic + Abstract score with only 2 plugins (plus internal editing using time based effects, etc.)
If the creativity isn't there, then all the gear/plugins in the world wont help you in the creative process. You have to really dig deep for ideas, thinking outside the box, and immersing yourself into the story and the genre in general. What is the visuals you are seeing with (no audio) singing to you? How can I enhance this emotion portrayed on film? It's really a magical thing when you try ideas on a specific part, not go with them, and suddenly something fits perfectly, like it was meant to be. Never settle for the first idea, try multiple ideas. Do not worry if you have an expensive set up to do sound design, or score music. The greatest tool you have is within yourself, and your life experiences. Use this to your advantage!
