Whats producing

I always wanted to know what producing was can somebody explain it to me.

Ilan Breil

This is the million dollar question. There are what I call PRE-PRODUCERS (which develop material and make it better and ready for actors and filmmakers to see before it's too early) and actual ACTIVE PRODUCERS (which have the relationships with talent and the agencies and can actually pack and put things together to get them made.) And PHYSICAL PRODUCERS which are everything from a Unit Production Manager to a line producer who just over seas actual physical production but not necessarily the talent or the pieces of making it happen before a director calls action. Then there are some MONEY PRODUCERS. People that know how to too any of the above or just people that have access to money and get get the project financed. How's that?

I don't know Ellison, & I are one, The more I learn about what I'm supposed to do, the less I understand it.

"Producing" (in its most basic form, as I understand it) is making sure every element and person needed for a creative project is brought together to make that project. For the Best Picture Oscar, the producer(s) get the award for pulling all the elements of the film together. My 2ยข.

That's a fantastic breakdown, Ilan Breil! I usually divide it into three - an Executive Producer who is responsible for securing the money, a Line Producer who is responsible for figuring out how best to spend the money (scheduling & budgeting is their bread & butter), and a Creative Producer who ensures the heart of the project persists from script to screen (a combination of Ilan's Pre-Producer and Active Producer).

Producing : see the thread that Tennyson shared - and, in my opinion, it's like making a good soup. Pull all the ingredients, a way to hold them, cook them, and serve the soup to an audience! Good luck to you and have fun!
