How do you know what industry is looking for? If I want to write something I`ll pitch to Netflix (as example), how do I know what they are looking for? Any hint or link is highly appreciated! Thank you
Jo is right. Everyone wants something new that will connect with audiences. If you have something that you think will develop a meaningful connection with audiences and is told in your own unique way go for it!
You look at what prodcos and distributors are developing and releasing now and try to understand what's driving that. It's not spoken about much but we're currently in a golden age of family friendly conservative content while the media wants to make out Hollywood is screaming for more progressive material. It is what it is. The smart thing is to try and leverage what's there and move the needle in the direction you want it to go. I write very pulpy, edgy spec scripts but I produce movies aligned with the needs of the kind of distributors I have access to.
The mistake is to chase trends that aren't on the horizon any more. I've watched so many writers churn out Vampire and Zombie content over the past ten years while it's clear the market was oversaturated a long time ago.
As always, impending danger....so, what we have as a hot filming/coming up (all original ideas, no IP)
- Father defends his kids of a preying lion
- Two girls stuck on a 2.000 foot antenna
- Sharks
- More Sharks
- Vampires
What's not hot/never be:
- Telling a world of your troubles/problems via third party persona in a non-decisive melodrama...
Just got a real life story of a guy having a three day open sea venture hanging only on a plastic ball came to him via 130 km route (some kids lost playing on a beach)...
Lol u dont wanna go to Netflix now, them Execs in charge might not be around by next year (and I am a share holder).
For real.. nobody knows what the next hit movie or tv show. Nobody. This is all a guessing game and savvy industry ppl align themselves with many projects, praying 1 hits and pays for all the misses.
Who guess Squid Game would be a global sensation? Or who predicted Top Gun Maverick would save Summer blockbuster movies 2022 (and TGM was filmed 4 years ago).

Hi Ksenia. I think they don't even know what they are looking for until they find it! Just go with your gut and what you want to write about.

Don't follow trends, or chase trends. By the time you write something the trend has changed by x2 or x3 ...
