Short Film - Production insurance

Hello everyone out there and stays 32 land! I’m producing and directing my first short. I found some talented people to work with or excited about the project. I found a location and a good portion of the financing. Hooray!! However now I’m looking for insurance. I’m pretty sure I need at least general liability and probably Worker’s Comp. however I’m being hit with all these other things that I’m supposed to have like inland Marine and equipment insurance and a plethora of other things I don’t really understand. At any rate, the quotes I’m I’m getting our way beyond my budget. So my question is what do I really need to carry for a short film. This is only a two day shoot. We are not renting much equipment as The DP is using his own equipment. We will have one location to ensure which is a residential home. The location is in New York State. The quotes I’m getting are between 1500 and $1800. Any advice in this area will be immensely appreciated. UPDATE: I found very reasonable rates at https://www.thimble.com/

Btw we formed an LLC

B A Mason regulations (in NY at least), say I need general liability and that’s it. But when I talk to insurance, they tell me I need all sorts of other things. I dint want to be the guy in your story, I want to protect myself and our cast & crew but I also want to make the movie. Just wish I knew what was needed and what’s an upsell. As for workers comp I just learned nobody would be covered because I have no employees - everyone is a contractor and not covered under a workers comp plan anyway (again, in NY)

Dan MaxXx good idea! I was even thinking of joining a class myself (have in past) where they let you use their insurance.

For a short, you can likely get away without workman's comp which adds a large chunk. Some gear truck providers are also G/E crew so if you can employ one of their staff, then the comprehensive for the G/E is often covered under that company's insurance. Bottom line is much of it depends on what a location or G/E rental requires It's an awful expense that has skyrocketed recently.

Happy to talk about it more in depth, but a DICE policy - https://www.wrapbook.com/blog/producers-guide-dice-insurance-policy - can cover General Liability, Miscellaneous Rented Equipment (MRE), Non-owned Auto (if have any rented transportation in play), Prop/Wardrobe (if have any rented art or costume). Workers Comp could be through a Payroll Company if you’re running payroll on anyone (it’s a % fee based on gross wages). You can also look at starting a small policy and scale depending on what you end up doing that year (like take MRE up with a 30-day rider to cover a bigger replacement value rental). https://www.rvnuccio.com is reasonably priced and has been easy to work with in my experience. Thimble is attractive at face value but very limited on coverage.

@jamie thanks, much appreciated. I will look into these
