What's in a name

If you put a little bit of effort into naming your cast of characters, you’ll create a fun reading experience for someone who desperately needs it (producers, agents, script readers) – and thereby increasing your chances of your screenplay being that pearl or diamond in the rough.

Thanks for sharing this article, Jacob N. Stuart. Great read! I like to give my characters names based on their personalities and sometimes appearances.

David Draper

Very nice article Jacob N. Stuart. Naming characters is always fun. Sometimes I look up popular names in other countries and use those--or tweak them. So much more fun than the usual.

That's a cool idea for character names, David Draper. "Sometimes I look up popular names in other countries and use those--or tweak them."

David Draper

Cheers, Maurice! Feel free to steal it lol! All the best to you!

Maurice Vaughan

I can definitely use that idea when naming characters since my scripts are diverse, David Draper. All the best to you as well.

Derek C. Block

This is a wonderful article. I look at military muster rolls and write out a list of my top 10 first names and top 10 last names and mix-match them until something pops out but "fits" the personality of the character I created. For a Western feature I wrote, Jeremiah Best was one such name. For ladies, I tend to look at High School Yearbooks or City Directories and apply the same technique.

Maurice Vaughan

I like that name, Derek C. Block. Jeremiah Best. It sounds like a Western name.

Thanks, Maurice Vaughan
