This Q pops up all the time. Excellent lounge boilerplate, but might be better in a lounge FAQ.
A: Marcos nailed it, of course, with it depends ...
Then again, I am rather fond of third person autobiographies, first person academic texts and instruction manuals. And 11th person treatises on string theory.
I tend to favour 3rd person - with 1st person retained for letters, journals, etc.. What I have always liked about Wilkie Collins was his shared narrative from the viewpoint of several different characters, both main and minor. Something I want to try out some day...
I am ghostwriting the unofficial autobiography of Coco (a blue and gold macaw), called Born With A Beak. I'm writing it in first-bird POV. I know, I kind of stole the title from Kate Mulgrew's memoir, Born With Teeth but it was Coco's idea, and he insisted. Just before he threw his dinner bowl and projectile vomited on the ceiling.

I do both. I slightly prefer 3rd person, but I guess it depends on the book context.

I am currently writing a book in which each chapter covers a different character. They all speak in the first person. You be the judge!
