"The Boxtrolls," Shawn Jackson!
I think I've heard of "Fritz the Cat." I haven't heard of "Watership Down" and "Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart."

Maurice Vaughan, Watership Down is very dark. It's about rabbits. Jack and The Cuckoo clock Heart is or at least was on Netflix and is also a bit dark but also rather sweet.
My Top 5:
1) Redline
2) Naausica and The Valley of the Wind
3) Princess Mononoke
4) Spirited Away
5) Heavy Metal (the 1st one )

Thanks, Elaine Haygood. I haven't seen any of your favorite Animation movies. More on the watchlist. :)

Maurice Vaughan Fritz the Cat changed what I thought was possible. They eschewed every rule and made an animated movie.
Watership Down is creature animation done right.
Elaine Haygood What feels dark in the movie is the portrayal of the realistic life and death struggles of nature.
The treatment felt verbatim from the well written book.
Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is a visual feast and a well told story.Honorable mentions to Howl’s Moving Castle.

Shellie Schmals Who Framed Roger Rabbit just counts haha. I would think so. Interesting list, do you like the DC franchise? Coco was so good!!!

Maurice Vaughan I see you like the classics! I haven't seen the boxtrolls myself.

Shawn Jackson Coraline definitely counts. It's in my top 10. A lot of movies on your list I haven't seen.

Elaine Haygood I see a theme in your top 5 haha. I haven't had the chance to watch many anime movies but I have seen Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away and I really liked them. I really like Sing a Bit of Harmony. It is actually one of my honourable mentions.

Lloyd Dsouza great list, a fellow Pixar fan I see. I really liked Luca a lot. I rewatched WALL-E last year and I appreciate it more now than when I was younger. It's also really great.

I'd like to give you my own list of 5 favorite animated movies, but all I have right now are The Peanuts Movie, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There, and Fantasia. I could use the fifth spot for any other Studio Ghibli film, but I just can't think of one right now!

I RECOMMEND "The Boxtrolls," Marvin Younathin! On a side note, I saw "Chicken Run" in the theater.

Trevor Kiki's Delivery Service was such a wholesome and enjoyable film. I really loved that movie. I still have a few Studio Ghibli films to watch on my list. I haven't heard of the other movies. How are they?

Brian I 100% agree. Tangled is very good. It really is underrated. What I love about it the most is that it takes the classic story of Rapunzel and puts a whole new spin in the story like I haven't see before. This in itself makes it a standalone movie. I was really impressed when I watched the film.

Shellie Schmals that's awesome. I prefer DC over Marvel by a long mile, but I am not as well versed in the DC lore haha. I love batman's villains and heroes especially.

Michael a very diverse list, I love it! Fantasia is still on my list. Will get around to watching it eventually haha.

Maurice Vaughan sounds good, I will definitely add it to my list. My list keeps growing and growing. I will never get around to finishing it haha.

Me too, Marvin Younathin. My watchlist keeps growing and growing. My show list too. Haha
"Tangled is very good. It really is underrated. What I love about it the most is that it takes the classic story of Rapunzel and puts a whole new spin in the story like I haven't see before." That's one way to come up with fresh ideas.

Maurice Vaughan it's inevitable for us writers haha. What's your current number? I am sitting at a whopping 90 movies/shows on my list thus far.
That is exactly why I love the movie so much. Tangled was a good lesson in showing that you can come up with fresh ideas even if it seems all ideas have been done already. Ideas are everywhere. You just need to open up your imagination.

I don't know how many movies are on my watchlist, Marvin Younathin. Thousands? I hope not. Haha
You're right ("Ideas are everywhere. You just need to open up your imagination"). Can I add a post link about coming up with ideas?

Maurice Vaughan you and I are similar in that if I made a count of ALL the particular "lists" on my various Streamers, it would add up to about 2 thousand.
In fact, I'm convinced that one of the reasons movies and series I love and add to my lists get taken off the services is because they can't figure out any better way to contain me.

Elaine Haygood It's like when I watch a movie on my watchlist, I add two more. Haha It keeps growing and growing. I watch a lot of short films too.

Maurice Vaughan woah that's a lot haha. Yes by all means. No need to ask. I'd love to have a look.

Elaine Haygood 2 thousand movies? Wow I am hitting rookie numbers compared to you and Maurice haha. I might need to start adding more to my lists to catch up. To be fair I am a bit picky on what I choose to watch (though I am willing to watch a variety of films and shows).
2 people like this
Maurice Vaughan that is what happens to me to haha. Watch 3 movies and I add 5 movies or shows after haha.

Yeah, there's probably thousands of movies on my watchlist, Marvin Younathin. I don't have as many shows on my TV watchlist though. Speaking of shows, I like to watch reruns of shows that I watched growing up. Cartoons and live-action shows.

Maurice Vaughan it's slowly becoming the opposite for me. Since I started writing shows I have been adding a bunch to my list. Soon they will overtake the movies haha. I should do that now as I am writing my own shows. I hadn't thought of going back to the old shows I watched when growing up.

Maurice Vaughan no worries at all. Glad I can help out.

Marvin Younathin Sometimes when I watch shows that I saw growing up, I like to look for things that I might've missed as a kid/teen.

That’s hard, so I’m just gona list the ones that stand out in recent memory
1. Coraline
2. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
3. Spirited Away
4. Aladdin
5. Akira
Honorable mention to Secret of Nimh (I’d be remiss if I did not fit a Bluth production in there somewhere)

Shellie Schmals WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT absolutely counts (the majority of the characters are entirely animated) and it was the movie that opened up my eyes and sent me into the film business so it is number one on my list.
1) WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT
It's very tough for me to choose 5 because so many of those listed here I actually worked on, and I have a bias towards many of those, but I will keep it to pure enjoyment of the characters/story/ and artistry: (in no particular order)
2) THE LION KING
3) MULAN
4) UP
5) DESPICABLE ME
Close seconds are SPIDERVERSE, ZOOTOPIA, and BOXTROLLS (yay, so happy to see that on a couple of lists), THE JUNGLE BOOK, SNOOPY COME HOME, MONSTER HOUSE ---
Jeez there are so many, we need a top 10 list.

I forgot about "The Jungle Book," Laurie! "The Boxtrolls" is my favorite Stop-motion Animation. "ParaNorman" is one of my favorite Stop-motion Animations.

Daniel Napoli a great list indeed. Coraline is very good. I really like Tim Burton's animated movies.

Laurie Ashbourne That's awesome to hear that Who Framed Roger Rabbit was what started you on the path into the film business. That's why top 5s are difficult haha. But you've got an awesome list. I forgot about Mulan and actually really like that movie. Despicable me is an interesting choice. What do you love about that movie the most?
With all the traction these posts are getting I'm definitely keen to start top 10 movies/tv shows posts soon. Will make things a little easier haha. As a sneak preview into my top 10 list Isle of Dogs is on there as well as Coraline.

Marvin Younathin Despicable Me gets my vote on a number of levels; character design and arcs being up there, but it's also a franchise that purely in it for the fun of the medium and the proof as they say is in the pudding. Not only is the animation and storytelling completely golden in its comedic and emotional timing, unlike other boundary pushing franchises such as Shrek, this one has never disappointed at the box office. Add to that Meledandri's respectable and global production process it is deserving.

Lion King was a cinematic masterpiece. Spirited Away, Atlantis, Beauty and The Beast, and Tarzan. ☺️ My heart will always be with 2D animation.
I did love Inside and Out too. Best story telling I’ve seen in decades.

Laurie Ashbourne that is a very interesting take on the movie. I am glad you shared this with me and all of us. That is true about Despicable Me, it was a fun, wholesome movie that still provides and lives up to it's original intention. That is true, a lot of people have enjoyed this franchise. I have only seen the first 2 movies. Perhaps I need to give them a rewatch and finish the series. The last movie did look like a lot of fun. I got to say I do like the animation style as well.

Martha Pennington nice list of 2D animation movies! Yes we need to go back to the traditional 2D animation! Inside Out is amazing! It's definitely one of the best stories I have seen in animation and movies as a whole for a while now. I'm so excited for the second movie coming out in 2024 I believe.
