Screenwriting : Representation by Mr Daniel Padbury

Representation

When you receive an offer of representation how do you tell that your priorities are aligned and that this person is legitimate? Are there specific questions one should ask or does it all centre on the legal agreement that my attorney drafts?

Agents should be WGA signatory. That means they spent $1000, invested skin in game.

As for managers, ask who else is on their roster, and talk to clients.

It's still a hustle. Reps favor talent with real money offers. Less developing new talent these days.

"When you receive an offer of representation how do you tell that your priorities are aligned and that this person is legitimate?" Mr Daniel Padbury I suggest having a Zoom call with the rep and asking questions to make sure your/the rep's priorities line up. You can ask the rep questions about their industry history and their clients. You can also research the rep to see if they're legit.

Good advice so far. Check out their IMDb credits, Vet them out on Zoom meetings and review any agreement to ensure it's equitable. I just wrote my right-to-shop to work with a young UK producer for six months. It allows them only the right to shop and not develop the material. It allows us to negotiate our separate deals if any offers come from production companies. Have someone with legal acumen review all agreements.

If your attorney is the one having to draft the agreement that's not a good sign. Signatory and/or viable credits and clients. Legitimate representation agreements are pretty standard. They're also not hard to get out of if things aren't what you expected. What business priorities might you have besides selling your work? Aligning artisitic priorities is a little more complicated, but if they're legit and aggressive you'll find that out soon enough too.
