Screenwriting : Character Naming by Jill Godley

Character Naming

I have three characters in my Pilot that the audience and main character doesn't know the names of until the second and some even later episodes. I have read mixed things about giving them "names" in the script. Should I give their REAL NAMES, or stick with just a generic SPORTY GUY ?

Arthur Charpentier

yes, you need to specify the name when the character first appears

Molly Peck

Hi Jill, definitely write in their real names! For anyone reading the script, it will be really confusing to stick to generic titles until the main character finds out their names.

Ryu Reeves

Hi, Jill! Yes, it's best to share their names within the first episode as people need a reason to care. Giving their names lets the audience into your world. It's more intimate that way. The only time that might work is if it's a straight up comedy and it becomes a running gag.

Maurice Vaughan

I agree with what everyone said, Jill Godley. Putting the character's real name makes better sense. Disregard my comment on your other post about putting "PRETTY GIRL." I think you should still also add a note in the series bible about the girl being important later in the series.

Thank you everyone, because most information is based on feature films it can be hard to know if the same rules apply for tv shows since the story isn't over yet.

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Jill Godley. I mainly write features and shorts, but I'm learning more about writing TV.

Michael Lee Burris

As long as I don't need to identify with a character. This is smart. Generic names can lead to generic character unless that is the point of character.
