I'm putting together pitch deck on a spec TV drama and want to include some relevant industry data. I'd like to include viewership, revenue, popularity figures based on genre/sub-genre, and about specific shows I'm using as comparisons. So what is revenue/viewership for TV dramas vs comedy? How many people watched Sons of Anarchy? Is there a good, public source for this data?

Chris Poore You could start with The Numbers website, which has tons of information about budgets, who the distributors are, ratings, etc.

Chris Poore Hi Chris, when you are talking about 'revenue' for a TV Spec series, what do you mean?

I think I was thinking something comparable to box office results, but obviously that doesn't exist for TV. Viewership stats would be outstanding.

Chris Poore Nielsen post viewing figures for Network TV, and the Streamers theirs, but as many will point out, there is much dissatisfaction with how such figures are reported and their accuracy. They may be indicative only and not actual, but that would be a start, I suppose.

It depends on who you're pitching to. If you're pitching to broadcasters, streamers and producers, they will know what is working in the market and what isn't, so you don't need to provide this data (especially to a broadcaster or streamer, as their data will be more accurate than what you can find). If its for financing this data is more relevant.

Hey Chris - I concur with Ewan. If you are raising independent money from a financier then you need to have this type of data to project ROI. If you are pitching to streamers, networks or producers this data is not needed. They know the marketplace and are interested in the creative vision and potential of the characters and show. They then figure out the money if they at it, In fact, in my experience, it can backfire to try to include in a pitch an outlets own data - they know it better than anyone and want on ideas that capture the imagination. Hope that makes sense. Who are you planning to pitch to?

Agreed on all that but if you are pitching indie investors for a feature or want to know those stats personally, love the numbers.com as suggested AND Bruce Nash did a webinar on Stage 32 about how to use them to get investors so highly recommend that! Best with your project!

I don't have representation, so planning to pitch to managers and production houses open to un-repped content. Still trying to figure out exactly who that is.

Chris, it sounds like you don’t need financial data in your deck then, managers are looking for the story and concept, and production companies will know the market, as well. I agree with everyone on their answers here. I also love TheNumbers for data, as well as Stephen Follows.
