Need some advice

A friend and I have recently finished our most recent round of edits on our play. We have been working on it for about two years. We feel that it is ready to be put in front of an audience but need guidance on the best road to take to get it there. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Since it's a play, contact local theater companies and see if they would like to do a table read for you. You'll learn lots!

Hi Megan. Some theaters allow for new works. If you don't have luck that way, you could rent a space and direct and produce it yourself.

Playwright competitions, local theaters, and maybe a kick starter?

You can also organize a table-read yourself with friends and friends of friends so that you can hear it out loud and get feedback from your readers. Sometimes just hearing other people read your work out loud can give you so much clarity on what still needs work and attention.

We have a meetups page here at Stage 32 where you can organize a local get-together with other members of the community who live nearby- https://www.stage32.com/meetups

I agree completely with table reads, maybe even a few where you invite some people to hear it read and build some word of mouth or use those as mini-crowd funding events. But putting it up on it's feet, even around a table, will be helpful in a lot of ways in my experience.

We have organized 2 Zoom table reads and they went well but sadly no audience came. We are thinking of doing another one and seeing if we can drum up more buzz to get an audience. I was thinking about some of these ideas, but seeing you all recommend them too makes me feel more confident about it. Thank you all so much!!!

Congrats Megan Kroeger do you have a SPECIFIC question? I've produced plays for years. Had a sellout tour in Texas during Summer of 2021. What exactly would you like to know?

Megan Kroeger

Fran, I am looking for how to produce this new work? What to look for, to get it in front of an audience.

Fran Harris

Megan Kroeger That's a BIG question. My first reco is to decide on your WHY. Why do you want to do this play? Educate, entertain, invoke change? The road to production could be different depending on the answer. That's why I capitalized SPECIFIC. I don't want to give you feedback on how to produce a play in community theater that should really be shown in schools, ya know? The process for production is pretty straightforward: cast actors, cast director, cast crew, rehearse, start growing your audience - or if you already have the audience, move on to booking a location (online or offline), marketing and opening night. Lots of questions to answer but honestly, those are the basics.
