For all my actor peeps out there, do you guys think casting directors will start in person auditions ever again? Self tapes are cool but I feel like it's almost like trying to win the lottery because casting sees at least 3 times as more talent now per role since it's mainly self tapes.

It's a great question, Omari. I think self-taping is here to stay on some levels just like Zoom pitches (which I hate compared to pitching in person) but nothing can replace a live audition and there are few things more important or revealing than an in-person chemistry test between actors up for romantic comedies, buddy pictures, dramas about relationships, etc.

Self tapes are here to stay! In person will always play a part, but self tapes are a staple now.

I was at a Casting Director panel recently and they said that zoom auditions and self tapes are not going anywhere. The long time casting directors want to be in person the younger ones prefer the self tapes - it's more efficient. The main reason is that production companies don't want to pay for casting offices when they can do zoom and self tapes. So the big houses like commercials, Disney that have casting offices built in will be more likely to have in person auditions.

I think more and more, in-person auditions will be exclusive to chemistry reads, screen-tests, and occasionally callbacks. Self-tapes will continue to be the first step audition process and then as you move along, they'll still need to get you and the other actors that are being narrowed down through the process into a room together with the producers, director, and CD.

I’ve cast my own stage plays and films virtually and in person. I just did a game show audition virtually and got cast - but the strike happened and the producers decided to take a break.
