Upgrade gear

Hello, I hope this year I will upgrade my personal gear - Do you have any suggest for indie film-making and music videos? I'm checking infos about blackmagic 6k pro or a sony fx3. What are you thoughts about them? Do someone use one of these cameras? Thank you!

Stephen Folker

Hey Mathias Rat - Both are great cameras. I've owned both.

If you do a lot of run & gun shooting where you may not have help on set, Sony all day. The AF is top notch. Plus the lowlight capabilities is truly insane.

The 6k Pro looks gorgeous (thinking of buying another one now), but it's going to add a workflow that may slow you down. But for 2500, built in NDs and internal raw recording, it's hard to beat for the price!

Also, consider the A7iv. I think for the price, it looks better than the FX3. Or the Blackmagic Pocket 4k (so you have some extra dough for accessories (if you need 'em).

What are you shooting on currently?

Hello Stephen Folker , thank you for your suggestions - I didn't consider the sony a IV but I'm cheching the full specs and their are extremely flexible but the downsampling is 4:2:0 and it could be blocky during color grade process - I am considering seriously the blackmagic family and it's running inside my head for a while.

Are still great the pocket 4k? Does it have the nd too such as 6k?

Mainly I shoot music videos and events but I would to shoot short films much more frequently. Thank you in advance.

Stephen Folker

I don't shoot music videos, but for quick setups with amazing Autofocus tracking, I'd get the A7IV all day. Shoots 10bit, which is more than adequate. Another note, the pocket 4k does not have NDs built in, but it's much cheaper than the 6k pro. You can use cheaper SD cards which will save money. The 6k pro needs a more expensive media and eats up more room on HD.

Also, a friend of mine used to be a colorist for Technicolor and is still a professional colorist told me Sony is not the best for heavy color grading. Where as Blackmagic grades like butter.

Take it all for what it's worth! I'm in the same boat looking to upgrade and I get caught up in the same stuff.

Also... the Panasonic S5 is amazing camera and can shoot external raw with NinjaV.

This this is really really interesting — with two answers you open mind and covered doubts. Thank you so much. Hope to take a decision soon considering money, specs and accessories. Thanks again. :)

Anytime! Keep me posted as to what you end up getting! :)

Thank you for sharing all of this helpful advice, Mathias Rat!

I agree with Stephen Folker. Great thoughts. I have a soft spot for Blackmagic as it grades extremely well and yields pleasing skin tones. The 4K is great and unless you need more resolution, you can't beat the price. Internal NDs are a big plus but that's doubling the price.

I like the FX3 a lot and if you need autofocus, it's the way to go.
