Most of the time I have to use samples. I've had gigs with real orchestras in concert situations, but more often the projects that come in just don't have the budget for it.
Congrats George Ioannidis , always so good to hear live instruments performing music you've written! I'm team live all the way, though as has already been mentioned VSTs have to do sometimes due to budgets
That’s a good size and will sound nice. I had a gig come in this past Friday to do a string arrangement on a country tune. I’m sure I’ll have to use samples due to budget. It’d sound better with a pretty small section of live players. I’ve got a 2 mix of it with a basic band with acoustic guitars, mandolin, bass, drums, and vocals. It wasn’t recorded with a click so I’ll make a tempo map so bars will line up and go from there. I’ve worked with this artist before so it’s an enjoyable hang and I’m looking forward to writing something for it later this week. We have a phone meeting today to talk about arrangement. I’m on the west coast and they are on the east. Pretty nice that we can zoom and work with people all over the place these days. Keeps it interesting…
Always a pleasure having real instruments recorded by professional musicians. Samples are great for layering but are still missing the wonderful and irreplaceable emotions.
