Proof of concept films

I’ve seen a lot of hype around proof of concept or PoC films lately. What are your thoughts about it?

We are starting the production of our second feature film based on a proof-of-concept film. Our first was Target List – you can watch the PoC on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/The-Wand/dp/B09CLNL8KM) and the feature film free on TubiTV (https://tubitv.com/movies/100002231/target-list).

Our second is Nidstang that is currently in pre-production – you can watch the PoC on YouTube (https://youtu.be/pO4vokY6tew).

Would love to hear others experience with proof-of-concept films and taking them from the PoC film to a feature film.

Congratulations on all your success MP, how cool! Love the Target List PoC, it's a great little clip.

I've been involved with quite a few PoC shorts over the years, some very high end, but none of them have ever come to anything. Are there any things you did that you feel really helped you transition to feature, or any common PoC mistakes you've seen other people make?

Hi Joanna, I would say the important things are to have a great script with market viability (ie, something people want to see), then making a high-quality PoC that helps you "sell" the script to people. We raised the funds for the feature film in 1 year after the release of the PoC. Although most of the funds came from private investors, we also raised funds using a fundraiser (we have one going for Nidstang right now: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-produce-feature-film-nidstang). We got a lot of screenwriters who wanted to learn filmmaking to donate and in return they got to be a part of the feature film production. I think the biggest thing is to have a passionate group behind the film who really wants to get the film made. If you don't have that, the chances of getting the feature film made is low (unfortunately). So, it really is a group effort!

Thanks MP, it's really cool to hear about your experiences. So good that you were able to pull a group together like that. I'll be passing your strategy on to any future directors I work on PoC with!
