Hi All,
My name is Judd Cherry. I'm excited to be joining the lounge as a moderator and wanted to introduce myself to everyone. I'm a director, producer, and screenwriter based in Austin. I've been in entertainment for over 20 years and have been directing professionally for the better part of the last 14 years. I learned from and shadowed directors like Sam Raimi, Shawn Levy, and Ben Stiller to name a few. Please check out my credits and I'm happy to answer any questions. Looking forward to chatting with everyone here!

Hey, Judd Cherry! Great to have you in the Filmmaking Lounge! Ooo, another multi-hyphenate, I love it! Actually, I'd love to know from your experience - how do you decide on the projects you direct? When do you make the commitment to produce? Do you often do all three or try to keep them compartmentalized?

Wow, you shadowed Sam Raimi, Judd Cherry! He's one of my favorite producers. He produced some of my favorite Horror movies like "Evil Dead Rise" and "The Grudge."

Karen "Kay" Ross for directing, it really depends on if I spark to the material. I've directed a ton of commercials but always love doing the more story driven ones - a lot are very product forward which can be interesting, but I'm a storyteller so prefer those. On the narrative side, I really look for projects that I can have fun with, that don't feel hackneyed. If it's something that's genre-bending, I love that. I'm a comedy guy through and through so I'm always attracted to funny stuff but I also look for interesting worlds if I can find them.
Same goes for producing. I'm a creative producer but I have the logistical experience as well. If I'm going in for the long haul, though, I have to know the project has legs or at least feels like it's going to, if that makes sense.
It can be tough to compartmentalize but I've learned over the years when it makes sense to bring all the hyphens to the table. All of my short films, I've been involved in the writing and producing of, and the last two TV shows I produced, I also was heavily involved in the writing and very much by the director's side to provide creative input. But I always want to make sure they're cool with me providing that before I offer it.

"Spider-Man 2" is one of my favorite "Spider-Man" movies, Judd Cherry. They did an incredible job on Doctor Octopus.

Maurice Vaughan glad you liked it. I'm particularly biased but it's my favorite of them, though the Spider-verses are coming in close. I wrote a pretty significant portion of that script with Alvin Sargent.

That's really cool that you wrote a pretty significant portion of the script, Judd Cherry! It must've been something writing a "Spider-Man" script. I just watched "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" yesterday/early this morning.
