Geoff Hall Well, in the second grade, my teacher had us do a short story assignment, and I haven’t stopped writing since! I wanted to entertain at a young age but have grown to want to educate and inspire too! I also found writing to heal me as a child as I endured a lot!

Hello Alicia McClendon! I love that you're not only writing but you're also able to turn them into short films. That's fantastic. And the shorts can be a very useful tool as proof of concept of your writing as well. Keep it up!

Hi Alicia! Have you seen our short film contest? Our winner last year was short listed for an Oscar and all our finalists were screened at Hollyshorts. It’s the best short film contest in the industry: https://www.stage32.com/contests/9th-Annual-Stage-32-Short-Film-Contest

Amanda Toney I’ll probably submit! I just don’t think it’s Oscar worthy! Any benefits in submitting?

Hi Alicia McClendon - happy IYW! Very cool that you write, act, direct and produce. Has acting informed your approach to writing and directing?

At the very minimum you have a proof of concept for your writing, and you also have the experience of making the short under your belt. At best, it would have a successful festival run and expose your work to a wider audience and expand your network!

Hi Sam Sokolow Yes! I tend to act in my own films and it has helped my writing a little. When I’m writing now, I’ll allow actors to make their own choices at times. I’ll also envision who I want to play a particular character as I’m writing which helps make the character 3 dimensional. For acting class, we have to do scenes and monologues and we have to make our own context and now I’ll write making sure the character gives the actor enough to work with! Good question!

Nick Phillips You’re right! I’ve been making short films for 2 years now and acting in them. I’m hoping my acting and/or writing gets eyes on our short films! Can’t hurt to do both and more!
