Screenwriting : Selling Strategy by ChristaCarol Jones

Selling Strategy

Good morning lovelies! So I was curious as to how many of you might have certain strategies in selling your script? Do you pitch to multiple interested parties, do you pitch to one in hopes that it works and automatically accept the offer? What is your magical method?

Surround yourself with peers who actually do this for a living. Skin in the game. My spec script goal is for peers to pass my scripts to their circle. The "selling" is the craft-my take on whatever world I am imagining. As for money, I've never made life changing income selling my scripts. GL!

If you do whatever every other aspiring screenwriter does you’d probably end up getting the same results they get. Since only about 1 in 5,000 will ever make any money writing screenplays those odds aren’t good. So you are probably better off doing what other aspiring screenwriters don’t like to do. I can only say what I did seemed to help a little. One I made cold calls every day after I finished a screenplay. Another thing I did was attach a few well-known directors to some of my screenplays.

I can't really say that I have a true go-to method myself just yet, mostly because I'm still new to the professional side of this business and I'm still learning how to navigate this hedge-maze.

What I've done so far, is to connect with other writers, producers and enter contests. The point is that it's not a straight line from start to finish, you have to be prepared to meander, get lost, be insulted, insult others and maybe lose your wallet aling the way in order to find the right people who will support you.

...Or maybe that's just me. In any case good luck as you figure out your own path!

Everyone’s journey is different. There are two distinct stages. First is getting a meeting/pitch. The second is what happens in the room (this weeks video - check my wall for a link).

I would have as many meetings as possible. That will get around. Suddenly the screenplay has a reputation (let’s hope it is good). That will produce a desire in people, the fear of missing out.

So I would take as many meetings as possible. Regarding money. Look at the package. Is there value in working for these people? Orlando Bloom only got $170,000 for Lord Of The Rings. But he knew it would launch his career.

Pitch to as many people will hear you out! You never know who knows who and when they're looking for what. So as long as you make what you've created known and spread awareness to those around you, you're doing well!

Hi, ChristaCarol Jones. I get most of my script requests and jobs by networking (www.stage32.com/blog/tags/networking-41).

I also pitch on here and other platforms, and I send short, creative email query letters with catchy subject lines.

I also get a lot of my script requests and jobs because of the posters I make for my scripts.
