I am a US writer pitching my screenplay. Today I heard back from a producer that he is not sure if he can consider my script because it's difficult to do films with US writers. What would be the reason for that? Should I avoid pitching to Canadian producers in the future, or just not worry about it?

I would ask him to explain the road block perhaps its something that can be worked out or has a solution? Hopefully someone with more experience with international collaborations can weight in with some ideas.

I wonder if it's related to the union agreements. Did the producer mention if the Canada production is union or non-union?

Canada is a little like Australia in this regard. There are advantage to have as much local involvement as possible. I think there are some incentives for using a Canadian writer.
But having said that, heaps of production are done in Canada from the USA.
I would never disregard an opportunity. That Canadian may hand you a referral to a USA contact.

Hi Ashley Darland thank you for sharing! I agree with the other comments in that it’s usually some type of difference in how writers, directors, etc are utilized and guild rules/membership can differ but shouldn’t be an issue in my experience
