The bravest thing you can do as an actor when portraying a character is to be you. Do you agree with what I say in the video? Or does it depend on your approach to acting?
Ashley Renee Smith my own philosophy is that you don;t need to pull on personal experience. Every emotion we ever experienced is stored in our body. Working with imagination, breath and somatically to connect to affect is just as effective and equally personal.
The best nuances to acting always come from actors natural performance. All the weird everyday ticks we have (and are probably insecure about) never cease to come out brilliantly on screen
Pat Alexander true. If what you mean by 'ticks' is the habits that could be the source of a deeper /unconscious issue that hasn't been dealt with and hence the 'tick' is a way of protecting oneself from being too vulnerable , then I would add that it's a it's also excellent practice for an actor to be aware of those ticks so they can use them consciously and not habitually in performance. It can be limiting otherwise.

Great share, Alan Powell! Do you feel that pulling from personal experiences when acting helps to elevate the emotions of a scene?
