Introduce Yourself : Hello, All by Garrett Dunne

Garrett Dunne

Hello, All

Hi everyone;

I’m in my last year at Los Angeles Film School; and am now just trying to meet some like minded people in the film community as I transition from Oregon; where I was born and raised, to a life in Los Angeles. I’m mostly a writer, but the ones I can’t bear to let go I also direct.

I will be writing my final short film for school this November with plans to shoot in January/February.

Pat Savage

Welcome to Stage32 and happy networking! Also place a photo on your account so you are quid pro quo

Maurice Vaughan

Welcome to the community, Garrett Dunne. What genre(s) is your final short film for school?

Preston Poulter

Best of luck surviving Los Ageless.

Garrett Dunne

Maurice Vaughan Thank you. Currently; I’m shortlisting my story ideas for my final screenwriting classes. Based on time constraints and budget that I would have to work with; it’s either going to be a horror short or a crime thriller.

Garrett Dunne

Pat Savage Thank you.

Garrett Dunne

Preston Poulter Thank you. It’s definitely a different beast with the biggest city I’ve lived in being Eugene, OR.

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Garrett Dunne. Cool. Yeah, Horror and Crime Thriller can be done quicker than some of the other genres and cheaply. Looking forward to seeing some of your work.

Richard M Kjeldgaard

Hello Garrett. Hope all is well in Film School. Good luck on the short. I grew up in L.A. but now live in Scottsdale, AZ.

Omid Pourazar

Hey Garrett, welcome to the community. What are the movies that inspired you to pursue a career in film?

Loren E Chadima

Welcome!

Garrett Dunne

Omid Pourazar Funnily enough; it wasn’t movies that really did it for me. I’ve been an off and on comic book fan for most of my life. During the pandemic; I got back into it full time; but more importantly, I was learning Blender 3D for animation. These two things simultaneously led to me deciding that I wanted to try making animated shorts, which got me thinking about blending CGI with live action. Long story short; I managed to try my hand at basically every department on a film set, and I found that I loved writing and creating these stories. It’s really what made me bite the bullet and attend school for film.

Garrett Dunne

Loren E Chadima thank you!

Sam Rivera

Hi Garrett Dunne welcome to Stage 32 and congrats on finishing up your last year!

Pat Alexander

Hello Garrett, nice to meet you! Can't wait to see your projects :)

Omid Pourazar

Garrett Dunne Comics and animation are great sources for inspiration. You can draw obvious parallels between storytelling in film and in comics, since a lot evolves around creating the right images to tell your story in both professions. Storyboards are technically comics. I think your body of work as a filmmaker will benefit from these interests. A director I like to mention here is, Sam Raimi. You can see the influence of comic books in the visuals of his early indie films as well in his later big-budget work. I've recently seen "The Quick and The Dead" and a lot of the images could come right out of a comic book. It makes so much sense that he was picked as the director for Spider-Man.

Geoff Hall

Hello Garrett Dunne good luck with the film script and producing it. You'll have to share it with us on Stage32.

Garrett Dunne

Pat Alexander Thank you. I am working on getting some of my stuff put up right now.

Garrett Dunne

Omid Pourazar Sam Raimi is one of my favorites. His work on Darkman, the Marvel stuff, and even Drag Me to Hell have had a profound impact on me as a child (even if I saw Drag Me to Hell at far too young an age). I have been meaning to get around to the Evil Dead series, but they always seem to pull it from streaming when I have a chance to watch it.

Garrett Dunne

Geoff Hall Thank you. I will add it as soon as I finish it.

Garrett Dunne

Pat Savage I watched through the team up with Netflix. It was eye opening, so I am going to be getting a couple more soon.

Pat Savage

Great to hear this! Any help I can offer just ask!

Ashley Renee Smith

Sam Sokolow

Great to meet you in the community Garrett Dunne. What are your favorite genres to work in as a writer and director?

Garrett Dunne

Sam Sokolow My absolute favorite for writing is adaptations of Marvel comics stories that haven’t been done and probably aren’t even in talks yet. Allows me to work on my writing skills (plus, if the opportunity ever arose, I have ideas in my back pocket). I enjoy superhero/sci-fi media as a whole; but I also really like to write horror and mob related stories.

In terms of directing: I actually think horror is more fun to handle than trying sci-fi. I end up too focused on building the CGI world and lose a lot of time for focusing on anything else. Otherwise; same list.

Ashley Renee Smith

Thats awesome, Garrett Dunne! Do you have a favorite lesser-known Marvel character?

Garrett Dunne

Ashley Renee Smith For sure I want to highlight two of my favorite fringe-characters.

The first is Slapstick, who is basically what happens when you take a Looney Tunes character and drop them into the world of Deadpool.

The other one I enjoy is Terror from Terror Inc. Terror is basically a guy that killed a certain bear, got himself cursed, and has been around for thousands of years. He was originally taking on Knights in the Middle Ages in the comics, but he is currently a hitman that takes out criminals nobody else can touch. Also, he’s basically a corpse, and has to replace bits of himself with the bad people he kills. If they have special abilities, he picks them up along the way.

Nick Phillips

Hi Garrett Dunne! Making that move to LA is a big step and I applaud you doing it! And kudos for you for going out and making your short!

Susan Joyce

Congratulations on your short! Sounds like a fun one. Bravo

Brian Gunter

Hey there! Welcome to the community! Where about in Oregon are you from? If you don’t mind my asking? I grew up in Salem. And congrats on making your short! Sometimes you just have to go get it done yourself, right?

Cheers!

Garrett Dunne

Brian Gunter Thank you. I kind of grew up all over. I spent a lot of time between Roseburg, Eugene, Lincoln City, and Prineville. I also lived in Albany for a time. That’s a lot of ground to cover, but my mom has always been someone who can’t stay in one place for too long, so we were constantly moving after anywhere between 1-5 years. The longest we stayed somewhere, though was in the Myrtle Creek area, which was 7 or 8 years.

Brian Gunter

yeah that’s a bit of moving about Garrett Dunne

Tucker Teague

Congrats and best of luck. I'm a fellow Oregonian and I know the move to LA is a big one. I didn't myself but several of my friends did. Sometimes I wish I had.

Ashley Renee Smith

Thats so cool, Garrett Dunne! I'm a Marvel fan, but I'm an even bigger DC fan and I know that universe much better.

Brian Gunter

Garrett Dunne Lincoln City was one of our favorite weekend spots for sure! Definitely familiar with Albany, too. Used to live not far from there in Corvallis, also.
