I had a great virtual talk with producer Laurie Ashbourne about the nonprofit subsidiary to her production company LA Story Studio. It is inspiring to see at least one other person in the industry making the attempt. She was able to educate me about aspects of the production process that I was previously unaware of. I'm still hoping to form an independent nonprofit production company of my own, but I will need a partner with prior production experience, however great or small, to help me realize that goal. Thanks again, Laurie! :-) If anyone is interested in the concept you can contact me via Stage 32. Meanwhile here is a potential mission statement for the company:
HAND SHADOWS
MISSION STATEMENT
May 2024
Hand Shadows is a 501c3 nonprofit producer of original, high-quality film and television works, with all above-cost revenue going towards designated NGOs (non-governmental organizations). These will be organizations which are actively working in the field to improve the human condition, with positive, measurable results. It is our hope that Hand Shadows can be the starting point of a global movement that will address crises through the medium of artistic expression. It is no longer enough for the film & TV industry’s content to simply say something. The time has come for the stories we tell to DO SOMETHING.
I'm reaching out to accountants who specialize in nonprofits to determine the feasibility of such an endeavor. Granted, it's a different model for a traditionally for-profit industry; but if it were to succeed, it could change the way films and TV series are made in a positive, impactful way.

Laurie Ashbourne gives excellent notes, John Richard Sullivan. She read one of my scripts and gave me feedback. And she's super friendly. Hope you find a partner and resources for your nonprofit production company!
