Is Your Film Title REALLY That Important?

Yes, the title of a movie is very important. It serves several key purposes:

1. First Impression: The title is often the first thing potential viewers encounter, and it can create an initial impression or expectation about the film's content, tone, or genre.

2. Memorability: A good title is memorable and easy to recall, which is crucial for word-of-mouth promotion and marketing.

3. Relevance: The title should reflect the essence of the movie, giving some insight into its themes, setting, or main plot without giving too much away.

4. Marketing and Branding: An effective title aids in the overall marketing strategy, making it easier to create posters, trailers, and other promotional materials that resonate with the audience.

5. Searchability: In the digital age, a unique and distinctive title helps in online searches and social media discussions, making it easier for audiences to find and discuss the film.

A well-chosen title can significantly impact the movie's success and audience reach. What’s your take?

Great points, Fran Harris! Sometimes I'll type up a list of titles when I'm outlining a script, then I'll pick a title when I'm ready to register the finished script with the U.S. Copyright Office.

Lisa Lee

I have a hard time coming up with good titles. I suppose it's just something that takes time and practice, as with everything else, but it's frustrating.

Fran, I'm with you about the importance of a film title!

To me, that title is just as important as plot, characters, story structure, you name it.

And when I'm trying to come up with names for scripts, I try my best to be clever.

Thanks for posting! Glad you're here on Stage 32!

Is there one of these key elements that stands above the others in importance?

Wal Friman

Maybe "positive brand association", Anthony. Like we learned here the other day, someone had made a woke puke movie and had Disney market it as Star Wars. :-) Sorry.
