How Music Helps in Narrative: A Tribute to "La La Land"

There are not enough words to describe what I feel about this film, It's My Roman Empire but at the same time, it's the movie I could watch anytime. And the fact that how music has been used precisely in the whole narrative, ''La La Land" is a beautiful example of how music can elevate storytelling. From the opening number "Another Day of Sun" to the poignant "City of Stars," each song and score in the film not only enhances the mood but also moves the story forward in a seamless, magical way.

The film's use of music is not just for entertainment; it serves as a narrative device that deepens our understanding of the characters and their journeys. The music reflects their dreams, struggles, and emotions, making their experiences feel more vivid and relatable. For instance, the recurring motif of "Mia & Sebastian’s Theme" mirrors the evolution of their relationship, creating an emotional connection that words alone cannot achieve.

Moreover, the musical sequences in "La La Land" blur the lines between reality and fantasy, drawing viewers into the characters' inner worlds. The choreography, lyrics, and melodies work together to tell a story that is as much about personal aspirations as it is about the bittersweet nature of love and sacrifice.

One of the most powerful moments in the film is the "Epilogue" sequence. This nearly wordless montage uses music to explore an alternate reality, showing what could have been. It's a masterclass in how music can convey complex narratives and emotions without a single line of dialogue.

Well said Sidhant! I couldn't agree more. I just walked the Hermosa Pier and the lighthouse where they went and thought of how wonderful the movie is ! A great reminder for me to rewatch it.

Great points, Siddhant Choudhary! And now that I think back on movies and shows, you're right. "It [music] serves as a narrative device that deepens our understanding of the characters and their journeys. The music reflects their dreams, struggles, and emotions, making their experiences feel more vivid and relatable." I'll keep my ear out for that when I watch more movies and shows.
