Advice on how to format miniseries

I am working on a new idea that I intend to turn into miniseries. This is a new format for me and I am unsure whether it is better to write every episode in a separate document or to assemble all episodes in one document. What is the standard?

Ewan Dunbar

I'd suggest writing story and character outlines for your whole show (which you can present in your pitch deck) and the pilot script. This is how most series are presented at the pitching stage.

Matthew Kelcourse

If I understand it correctly, Johan Tebelius, if the pilot ep for a limited series is picked up, it goes to the writers' room for a complete overhaul of all episodes and even a complete retelling/reimagining; so writing all episodes would be a great writing exercise, but that may be all it becomes. As far as format, I haven't received any format complaints by using the same format I use for features. Just one guy's input.

Thank you Ewan and Matthew for the comments. I was planning to write all seven episodes but you are suggesting to focus on a pilot, as there probably will be a complete overhaul, as well as story and character outline. I appreciate the advice.

As someone who has done a ton of TV pitching over the last few years, I couldn't agree more with Ewan Dunbar. Write the pilot, put together the deck outlining the rest of the eps, pick 4-6 characters (no more) and outline their arcs. For a limited series, I'd get your pitch down to the 8-12 minute range.

Happy to help, Mark Deuce. We're all in this together.
