This upcoming lab will explore the transformative cultural moment surrounding the stories we tell about women. We're in a revolutionary phase, examining the complexities and nuances specific to the female experience. Our narratives now embrace diverse female identities beyond cis, straight, white perfection, celebrating 'messy woman' stories that empower imperfection on screen. Moving beyond, there's a growing interest in exploring stories of healing for women. Shows like BEEF, THE DROPOUT, and INVENTING ANNA explore power, corruption, and psychopathy through a female lens.
Your pilot script is your calling card, not just a sample of your writing. To stand out, it must embody your unique voice and perspective—the story only you can tell. Throughout our eight-week course, we'll focus on crafting relevant female-centric narratives that resonate authentically with your experiences.
Leading the lab is, Colleen Labella, a producer and Director of Development at Shoot to Midnight, brings extensive experience developing TV series and films that amplify voices from the LGBTQIA community and women. With credits including SINGLE DRUNK FEMALE and upcoming projects like Star Wars' THE ACOLYTE, Colleen champions playwrights transitioning to television, dedicated to authentic storytelling.

Hello Everyone! I wasn't able to attend the first class, but I was able to watch the recording, so I thought I would introduce myself here and answer the questions from the first class, as well as share my logline in case anyone wanted to let me know the 1)First question they have and 2) The first expectation that comes to mind.
Your name (pronouns you prefer):
Julia Anderson (she/they)
Where are you located?
Vermont!
Answers to questions from class #1:
Shows I wish I could write on: I am a Virgo, the Good Place, the 100, or Fall of the House of Usher.
Things I like in a female driven show: An agenda. I love when a womxn has an agenda and goes for it, to see the inner workings, rationals, and attempts to achieve it. I love shows that let us see a woman’s thought process, warring emotions, barriers and her problem solving.
Female driven shows I’ve enjoyed recently: Killing Eve, Insecure, Rapshit, Harlem, Twenties, The Haunting of Bly Manor.
Exercise from the first class:
Title: The Polycule: Gets Stranded on an Island
Logline: When a poet and hopeless romantic finds out she needs the blessing of her girlfriend’s four other partners before she can propose, she plans an elaborate polycule vacation to win them over.
Comps: White lotus meet Scott pilgrim vs. the world
What I want to get out of it this class:
Returning to the fundamentals of structure to restructure my pilot.
What are the various ways to become a showrunner
Writing a polished draft of the pilot to submit to NYU
Different ways to get management/staffed in a writers room
Setting up ensemble characters storylines/desires/goals
I look forward to meeting you all today!

hey Sam--where are you from in Maryland? I grew up in Rockville and have fam in Gaithersburg and Annapolis! Also, you said you went to Emerson--do you know professor Kathryn Ramey? anyhoo, hi! nice to meet you. And everyone else too! Hi! Definitely wouldn't mind an idea like let's zoom next Saturday when we would have class, and like Julia A said, maybe we swap pages and/or talk shop...

have a beautiful Saturday wherever you are! xoxox julia m
Has anyone heard of The Principle of Feminine Spiritual Primacy? My book "The Three Verbs of Being" and my script "The Poisoned Dart" encompass the principle by wide margins. That makes the scope of the writing immensely large and seemingly spread-out or unfocussed. But the richness of ideas and concepts in the principle is beyond description. And a worthy pond to fish in.
Please read my introductory material, below, in the lounge . I can use any help I can get.

Hi! Anyone in our class want to zoom up this Sat. Sept 28, when Colleen is away? We could swap some pages, give notes, hang and chat. It's ok if not, I know we are all very busy. Post your thoughts.... happy first day of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere :) xo julia mendenhall

Yelena, did you know Prof Kathryn Ramey? Not sure when you were at Emerson, but she's been there for awhile now. Anyhow, great school!
