Screenwriting : Why do you write? by Merlin Love

Merlin Love

Why do you write?

I'm curious about your motivations for writing. Top three. Joy? Money? Fame? Creative compulsion? Boredom? I'm assuming, given that you're a member of this community, that you're seeking information, collaboration, and motivation to find success - but what opened those creative floodgates for you, and what keeps you going despite the challenges of finding success in this industry?

I started as a novelist (and have representation for that part of my creative life), which I enjoy and began as just a creative outlet. I slid into screenwriting as it's a more natural format for how my storytelling brain operates. So, to answer my own questions:

- For the love of it

- As an outlet for creativity

- I (probably hubristically) think I have compelling and original stories that people would enjoy

What are yours?

Maurice Vaughan

I write for joy, money, and because I have stories to tell, Merlin Love.

Merlin Love

Love it. Thanks for sharing Maurice Vaughan

Maurice Vaughan

You're welcome, Merlin Love. I write different things, but there's nothing like writing screenplays in my opinion.

Ashley Renee Smith

Because when it's all just churning around in my head I feel like I'm going crazy. LOL!

Merlin Love

I feel this Ashley Renee Smith. I swim laps daily and use that time to get lost in all my bubbling and churning story ideas, and when one gets loud enough to pierce through the rest of the noise in my head, if I don't get it out, it feels like an all-consuming fire.

CJ Walley

Because having a vivid imagination is a gift and having the opportunity to share the truths you learn about life is a blessing.

Rebecca Parkhomyuk

I write to share my imagination with people, and I think it helps them to understand me a little more. I also write to escape reality, idk I just find it relaxing lol

Merlin Love

Well, CJ Walley, that's a glorious and beautiful answer. Thank you.

Dan Guardino

My primary motivation for writing screenplays is my love for the craft. I find immense satisfaction in the creative process and the ability to bring stories to life through dialogue and visual storytelling. The only reason I am a member of this community is to connect with other screenwriters. Although I stepped away from writing spec screenplays a few years ago and still work on other people’s projects when asked to do so.

Alicia Vaughan

Three words, I love storytelling.

Adelmo Carneiro Lessa

I write because I am enchanted by the possibility of creating worlds, creating characters with different personalities, creating plots, I believe in that, in how much our mind is capable of creating.

Mike Childress

Definitely a level of catharsis when unleashing those idea gremlins from your head... Also real life can be woooooo so creating fantastical, alternative realities is quite freeing. "There are other worlds than these, Gunslinger..."

Fatima Anna Cesari

I write because I need it. I will be thrilled if this leads me to something beautiful, otherwise what I write will remain for me.

Mike Childress

Merlin Love How did you find the transition from novel writing to screenwriting?

Colin Guest

Like yourself, I am a published author of thirteen books in various genres. I came across Stage 32 by chance and thought it would be good to try my hand at writing scripts. Since then, and learning bits and pieces from Stage 32, I have written three scripts based on some of my books.one, is a short adventure story, one a short thriller and one a short romance story. I am now working on a feature- length romance/ drama based on one of my novels. Should you be interested in our talking, please let me knoow

Stefano Pavone

Because it's all I can do at this point, and if I can't get at least one story published or one script adapted or filmed, then I'll have pissed away half my life (nearly literally) for nothing.

Jim Boston

Merlin, I write because I get a whole lot of fun out of it.

Thanks for posing the question...glad you're here on Stage 32!

Travis Seppala

It's fun. And if I can get people to give me money for having fun? Yes please!

Dan MaxXx

I worked on the tv show "Californication" and wanted the main character's lifestyle- drive a porsche, live in Venice Beach, do drugs, random sex partners, hang out with celebrities, self-employed, make a bag off writing.

Petra Jurasova

I think Inspire people around the world with the story. :)

Pat Alexander

Dan MaxXx one of the all time great shows!

Evelyn Von Warnitz

Definitely for the passion.

David Blaustein

Ultimately, I enjoy the idea that we can write anything into existence with the possibility of moving or inspiring people.
