Screenwriting : C is for ____________ by Fran Harris

C is for ____________

Sometimes you just need to push GOOOOOO -- and believe as you go.

Building confidence to write a screenplay starts with embracing the process rather than expecting immediate perfection. Many aspiring writers feel overwhelmed by the idea of crafting a flawless script from the start, but the key to confidence lies in action and persistence. You don't have to know everything about screenwriting to produce a decent first draft.

Start by reading and watching screenplays of films you admire - or films in genres in which. you write.. This helps you understand the structure, dialogue, and pacing used by successful writers. Seeing how professionals handle these aspects will make the task feel more manageable and less mysterious.

Next, create your writing routine. Dedicate a specific time each day to write, even if it’s just for a short period. Consistency builds momentum, and the more you write, the more confident you’ll become in your skills. Begin with small steps: write character sketches, short scenes, or outlines. Each small accomplishment builds confidence.

Another vital aspect is accepting that the first draft won’t be perfect. Screenwriting is rewriting. Give yourself permission to make mistakes and view them as opportunities to improve.

Finally, seek some credible feedback. Sharing your work with trusted friends or a writers' group or a script coverage pro can provide constructive insights and encouragement. Over time, as you develop your skills and get used to the process, confidence will follow. Keep writing, and your voice will strengthen with each draft.

Hi, Fran Harris. Great advice! I didn’t read a lot of scripts when I started screenwriting, and that was a big mistake. And when I read scripts, it was just for fun, which is fine if you just want to read for fun. I didn't study/break down the scripts. Another big mistake.
