At my age in my very late 80's, it so exciting to have a play going to be produced here in Pittsburgh that I began to write 40 years ago. "Angel of Mercy" is my play about the courageous woman labor organizer, Mrs. Fannie Sellins, who was murdered in 1919 by the coal operators because she was so effective in organizing and supporting the miners in getting shorter work hours down deep in the mines and higherwages. She was called the Angel of Mercy because of her continual, valient support for the families by supplying them with food and supplies for their children. I was so excited after all these years that it will be here on a Pittsburgh stage. I am basically a novel and poetry dude, but this play has been with me most of my life and it is so exciting that it will make the stage and her valient story will be told finally. Her murderers were known but even at at trial were never convicted. It is a story of a courageous grandmother of years gone by who should still be celebrated in this country. She was the Angel of Mercy and now it will be a play to have her courage and murder expressed to our country. Writers, you never know, do we? Just keep writing and who knows, maybe others will acknowledge what you have written.
