Filmmaking / Directing : First Time Directing by Jack Schickling

First Time Directing

I’m currently in the process of developing my first low budget short film which I am writing and directing. I was wondering if anyone could give me tips as a first time director..

I am relatively new to filmmaking and I am mostly a self taught filmmaker aside from a bunch of YouTube videos. I’m young and still figuring things out so I’m asking people who likely know way more than I do. What are the best practices to follow as a director? How do you efficiently use your crew’s time without wasting time?

Welcome to Stage 32, Jack Schickling. It's great to meet you. Here's an article for first time directors I think will be helpful: www.stage32.com/lounge/directing/First-Time-Movie-Director-Tips-You-Must...

Planning is your new deity. If you think you're getting too detailed, you're halfway there. Make sure you have portable power sources, food, nonalcoholic drinks, all the gear you need, and a sound person who knows what the heck they're doing. Bad sound will ruin a film. Bad camera work can be edited (to a degree).

Do alot of storyboarding and put your best images into your linear editor. This is a primitive of your project. Show it your crew so they can see it. Sometimes you can ask what can be better, with varying results.

Good Luck
