I'm planning on crowdfunding for the budget of the short I'm planning on doing and it's my first time fundraising. Should I add perks to help grease the metaphorical wheels on this? If so, what kind of perks? Any advice would be appreciated.
Signed .pdf copies of a shooting script. This is prolly the easiest thing you could do.
If you can sort the shipping at a reasonable rate, a physical movie poster that is poster sized and physical script copies for higher tiers.
I did a workshop with someone who offered DVD's in a kickstarter for a doc and he said it was a nightmare, so I would probably suggest hosting an online screening night for supporters, where you screen the film and do a Q&A afterwards with the above the line peoples.
If there is an important prop item, could you do a version of it for a keychain at a reasonable price? The doc guy with the DVD's also offered felted organs (I think his doc was health related), he had extras of both and took them to festivals and used them as marketing props apparently it was a thing and people who hadn't seen his doc knew about it because he was handing out stuffed kidneys and lungs or something.
I normally print stickers and postcards to give out at screenings, they tend to go over well.
Screenings access, credits, etc. Yes, beware biting off too much of deliverables for items to ship, pay for, etc. It can get overwhelming in expense and time.
What kind of film are you planning to shoot? What are your goals for this films and what do you want it to accomplish? Short films are primarily to show film people what you can do with little resources and hope it attracts enough attention so that someone will want you on their team. All one really needs is a reel and a reel can be a short films of different scenes. Focus on what your goals are and find a way to shoot it for as little as possible.
