I love this short video, but I'm not an actor or director. I faintly recall directing class for theatre and we were always told to let the actor find it with a few short kind words to guide you and a few improvisational skits, depending on the scene and story. These sound like reflections of an impatient director and some don't quite even know themselves what they want in the scene. They're looking for gems, but you have to be a good director to cultivate them. Not good if these are key, pivotal moments.
Oof, I think I’ve witnessed directors give some of those and thought they were fine. Faster? More energy? Those can be legit.
From the other perspective, I’ve seen directors ask for it again without giving any notes. They get the same performance and then seem disappointed. Explain why we’re going again! What do you want different?
Funny video, Tony Ray. Some of the notes in the video sound ok. I think it'd be great to have a blog, AMA, webinar, etc. that could help directors give notes.
Mike Boas That reminds me of a story I heard about the making of "The Shining". Jack Nicholson told Stanley Kubrick, who was notorious for doing a million takes, to not do so many with actor Scatman Crothers (Hallorann) for the scene where he murders him. After about 75 takes, Scatman Crothers looked at Kubrick and yelled, "What do you want from me, Mr. Kubrick!?"
