Screenwriting : One-sheet Format by Tammy Hunt

One-sheet Format

A one-sheet is a written “pitch” for your film or TV series idea on a single piece of paper.

Its structure is similar to a verbal pitch, and typically contains a title, a logline, and a synopsis.

Capture the reader’s attention with a hook, and then intrigue them with a story summary that highlights three or four of the most important characters and plot points.

There is no standard format, but it is best if it is easy to read, has an attractive layout, and uses as few words as possible. Avoid complexity or ambiguity, as one-sheets are usually skimmed very quickly. The point is to entice a producer, executive, or agent to read the actual script.

A screenwriter’s one-sheet is not to be confused with a movie distributor’s one-sheet, which is a movie poster designed to sell the movie. However, if your written synopsis evokes a clear vision of what that poster might look like, all the better.

Great advice, Tammy Hunt! "Capture the reader’s attention with a hook." I agree. I use a tagline as a hook for one of my one-sheets.

Thank you Tammy Hunt for enlightening us for a One-sheet Format. I did that exercise, last week, when I had to make a written pitch with 350 words and my biggest challenge was to be concise. I have a doubt: it’s vital to have in this one sheet the Why Me and Why Now? Or only a Title, Logline and concise synopsis? Thank you for you advice and teaching us :))

Are 0ne-pages an acceptable industry standard pitch format, Tammy?

I’ve done one-sheets with a similar format. We were trying to attract investors with ours, so we included info on who we had lined up as director, producer, visual effects supervisor, etc.
