Acting : Auditioning by Omari Washington

Auditioning

Hey actors, I'd love to get your perspective. Do you prefer in person auditions or self tapes these days? I feel like 80% of auditions now are through self taping, which can be frustrating if you're ana actor like me who lives to book the room. I feel like you can connect with casting, producers and directors more when you're in person.

I feel both (!!) and beyond blessed to live in a time where we can send a video to anyone, anywhere in the world, in the blink of an eye.

Crazy to think about how many insanely talented people never got their shot in the past just because they didn’t have the right resources or connections… yikes.

No excuses now—if you’ve got something to share, the world is literally at your fingertips. Wild

Terri Fielder

Both are fine with me but I like in person better!

Philip David Lee

As a director, I pretty much know what the role calls for and what I'm looking for. No need for actors to waste time and travel when I can see what they bring to the table in an audition tape. Otherwise, I'll go to the agent and manager directly. Now if I was looking for the next James Bond, I might have more personal auditions to see if they fit the body type or can execute rudimentary action moves, but even a tape can do that function as well.

First, I'm a voice actor so this doesn't necessarily apply but 28 years ago we all had to go in-studio for everything. I happened to be an audio engineer, married to an audio engineer, so we were able to set up one of the first professional VO home studios back in the late 90s. After that I never wanted to go to another studio. Fast way forward to 2020 when everyone had to then get a home studio, broadcast quality, and fast. By then I was ready to go back in-person but auditions for VO are rarely that way! I'm looking forward to seeing other's answers.
