I own an iPhone 13 (NOT the pro) and my wife owns an iPhone 15 Pro. I have always been fascinated with Mobile Phone Filmmaking. I want to shoot a short with one or both of these phones. I have already installed BlackMagic Camera app on them. I have chosen some shots I like from the series Halo and decided I want to try and replicate those scenes using the iPhone as the camera. Do you believe this is a good exercise, to get better at cinematography and lighting?

It sounds like a good exercise to get better at cinematography and lighting, Kevin Jackson. Looking forward to seeing your short!

Hey Kevin Jackson - Zack Snyder did this with an iPhone - could have been the iPhone 7 since it was in 2017. Here's a clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NELZCWcclI0

Yes, very good exercise! Use iMovie or Capcut to edit your clips. Save the final, and delete all the files/footage so you don't fill up the memory. Head over to YouTube and search for iPhone filmmaking, Smartphone filmmaking (or something like these prompts), and learn, learn, learn!

Anyone use a special app for this? I seen to remember Filmic was the cool app for accessing a lot of cinema tricks on IPhone. haven’t used it myself.
You’d want to shoot ProRes at 24 FPS, perhaps 4K.

Absolutely, Kevin Jackson! That’s a fantastic exercise, especially if you’re diving into mobile filmmaking. Studying and replicating shots from a series like Halo is a smart way to train your eye for composition, lighting, movement, and tone. It pushes you to analyze how the original creators achieved a certain look and challenges you to creatively problem-solve within the tools you have, like your iPhone and the Blackmagic app (great choice, by the way).
