If you’re someone who geeks out over practical effects (like I do), this video from Frame Voyager is a must-watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFl69HMiPzs
It highlights some of the most jaw-dropping practical work we saw on screen this past year and it’s a great reminder that even in a VFX-heavy world, practical effects are still alive, well, and blowing audiences away.
From fire and prosthetics to wild stunt coordination, it’s clear that the blend of creativity, risk, and ingenuity behind these scenes is still pushing boundaries.
What practical effects stood out most to you last year? Have you worked on a project that used practical effects in a clever or unexpected way? Let’s swap stories and maybe share a little behind-the-scenes magic.

As a movie fan, I love seeing practical effects in films, Ashley Renee Smith! Some of the practical effects that stood out most to me last year were the effects in the Civil War scene (I didn't know they used practical effects until this video), Alien: Romulus, Kingdom of the Planet of the Ape, and The Substance.

I have to say that some of the best practical effects from 2024 have to be from "The Substance". Between the full body prosthetics and practical blood effects, the work is amazing. Gross too... but in a good horror movie way!
