From Yale Drama to Marvel Magic: Kathryn Hahn on Comedy, Drama & Career Longevity

In this intimate and insightful interview, Kathryn Hahn reflects on her journey from theater school to television procedurals, to stealing scenes in countless films you probably forgot she was in, before finally earning the spotlight in leading roles and landing in the Marvel universe.

She opens up about the early pressures of being “taken seriously” in drama, and how she came to realize that comedy demands just as much, if not more, emotional vulnerability.

What would your last meal look like, and what’s one thing you’d want people to know about your creative journey to this point? Let’s discuss in the comments below!

My last meal would be a lot of seafood, Ashley Renee Smith. Mainly lobster. Thinking about a character's last meal can tell an actor or writer different things about the character.

Lobster is a bold and classy choice, Maurice Vaughan! And you’re absolutely right, thinking about a character’s last meal is such a great lens into who they are. It can reveal so much about their background, desires, regrets, even their sense of humor or ritual. Does your character go nostalgic? Sentimental? Decadent? Practical?

For me? I’d probably go all-out with a comfort food tour:

1. Three street tacos—Pollo, Asada, and Al Pastor—from my favorite taco truck in LA, El Chiris

2. Hermanaki wings from Ale Emporium in Indianapolis (still the best wings I’ve ever had)

3. A perfect Rainbow Roll

4. Xiao Long Bao (crab & pork), shrimp & pork potstickers, and chocolate mochi dumplings from Din Tai Fung

5. Thai pineapple fried rice and pork Pad See Ew

And I’d wash it all down with a great margarita and a Lemonade Cream Cooler from Sonic—because why not?

Now I’m hungry… and also thinking about what this mix of comfort and nostalgia says about me as a character! It’s such a small detail, but it carries a ton of emotional weight and storytelling potential.

All of that sounds delicious, Ashley Renee Smith! I'm hungry now too. Haha My first job was at Sonic. I was in 9th grade.
