Lately I've been asked questions about my script, questions about budget, do I want union or non-union actors, etc. Is this something that a writer should find out once a script is complete? I thought all I had to do was write and polish a brilliant script and then shop it around. Do I need to take a class in independent producing? Discuss! and thank you!

As a writer, I feel you do. I feel you need to have the creativity and mindset to bring the script to life before the directors and actors impose their views.
As a writer all you need to do is tell the story without limitations and maintain the credibility of suspending the disbelief. It is a Line Producers, Directors, UPM's job to put the dollar figure to the IP. Your job is to write that "calling card" screenplay that gets picked up for greenlight. Novices, "newbies" should first focus on establishing their writers voice, as writers. I spent 16 years writing, amassed a small library of speculative properties, of which four have been valued by my IP lawyer as representing 98M in production value, alone. Focus on your writing until your writing voice screams from the page. Get a Rep, also, if you can. They have their place, serve a function. Cheers!
Cheers!
