Producing : What should an Executive Producer expect out of a film? by LB McGill

What should an Executive Producer expect out of a film?

...besides the bill for a couple of trashed hotel rooms and his name in the credits?

LB McGill

all kidding aside I really need to know!

LB McGill

okay, that much I knew, but it's nice to have affirmed :) does he get any financial reward (presuming that there is any)? Does he own the movie? I'm very green when it comes to money and producing :p

Ray Anthony Martinez

Gotcha... Just wanted to make sure. It all depends on how the deal is worked. Here's an example: Let's say an Investor says, "I want to be Executive Producer"... budget is $100,000. Okay, movie is made, and say it sells for $200,000... The EP (initial Investor) gets their $100k back right away, and then a percentage of the profits... That percentage is agreed upon at the beginning. So, say it's 20%... They get their $100K and an additional $20k.... Hope that helps!

LB McGill

Thank you Ray! I don't have $100,000 friends, but I do have $10,000 friends and he doesn't know any more than I do. :) I just want to proceed professionally!

Ray Anthony Martinez

Now you only need 10 more $10,000 friends!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!! That's the basics of it. Using the above scenerio, you could easily figure on percentages like this: 10% per $20k... of course you have to take into consideration the Director will probably get 10% and so will the producer. Generally, you don't want to give away more than 50% of your movie.... It all really depends on your budget and what you'd expect to get out of it!

Ray Anthony Martinez

Also, if you plan on compensating the cast/crew. Which does wonders for how you are perceived by local talent... which may work for you at a reduced rate, because they know you will make it up "IF" the movie sells.

LB McGill

only 10 more $10,000 friends? is that all? :p yeah I probably do need a $100,000 to produce "Dinner for Twelve" but I just had the perfect 5-10 minute movie script fly into my head last night. I think I can shoot it in a weekend and and do it for 10 grand. I have a friend offer to finance my next project, but then my husband starts playing devil's advocate and starts asking me a bunch of questions I didn't know the answer to. So thanks Ray! I really appreciate the input!

Ray Anthony Martinez

No problem! Glad I could help! If you have any other questions, feel free to send me a message and I'll do the best I can to answer!

LB McGill

Thanks Ray!

James Holzrichter

LB McGill

I do James, but it's a dark comedy and I'm not sure you're a good fit, but I'll definitely keep you in mind for something else!

James Holzrichter

Durand Saint-Hilaire

HAHAHA -Well Lorelie if you ever make that 5-10 film, shoot it my way - I'll post on my site, I have a feeling it will be a great one....

LB McGill

Oh I will! This movie is right up your ally Durand! I can't give the plot here- that would be like dumping it in a pool of Piranha :p but it's called "Dead Serious"

Durand Saint-Hilaire

Loving it !

LB McGill

LB McGill

Inga McClellan

LB McGill

Inga McClellan

The executive producer should be part of the team responsible for the financial and creative aspect of the project, they should also question how this project will show a profit. They should meet frequently with the director and make sure the AD, scripty and UPM are all in sync. Let me know if you need ome help.

LB McGill

Thanks Kevin, the executive producer I have in mind for my short, knows nothing about the business, and wants to know nothing. He just wants his name on the picture and get invited to the parties! lol, but he knows me, he's known me for 5 years. He was the president of my theatre board and knows that if I say I'll do something- I do it. My word is my bond. Ray's advice was best for me in this case, where I can tell him- even if he's ignorant to the process, "You give me amount x and IF I make anything back I'll give you "x" back and a percent of the total." That's something he'll understand, now for bigger projects... well now that's where I might need some help Kevin. I need an adviser. I've been dealing with the theater for a decade and things run very differently in the movie business, I could easily get taken advantage of or I might not even pay someone what they should be out of my own ignorance. I'm learning. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. :)
