Are there a lot of book authors who turn their stories into screenplays, and if they do, do they usually write their own screenplays, or do they hire or outsource to someone else?

Don't know, just had someone turn down a novel to be made into a screenplay because it's published, so I'll write the screenplay myself. I've noticed a lot of screenwriter's turning other peoples books into scripts but I don't know how typical that is.
Jodie -- would you get really protective of the screen adaption of your work? If so, it's best to try to write the screenplay yourself. Be warned -- screenwriting is a completely different medium than writing a manuscript. A screenwriter will take your story and ADAPT it for the screen, this could mean changing/adding characters, changing the story lines, adding twists. You'll have to remain hands off until the screenwriter completes the work. You get "story by" credit. Screenwriter gets "screenplay by" credit if they completed 50% or more of the screenplay. After many drafts from your notes etc... it goes to market as a "spec". And hopefully gets sold or optioned -- which means a whole new round of notes and drafts and possibly new writers! The final product could read nothing like your original story. Enjoy the ride :-)
