Hey guys! I'm seeking possible shooting locations for a western horror movie. Needs to be in Louisiana if possible. I'm seeking a couple of towns with the 1880's look. Don't want to have to build the sets if we can help it.
If louisiana is specified because of incentives, then I would strongly consider New Mexico. N.M. has the demographics, La.'s demographics don't match. You could also do a period/zombie storyline in the same era as classical western America. Western Louisiana, along the Sabine River was a wild, no law type of badlands. An armed society as primitive as it was coupled with zombies sounds crazy. Cheers!
Cool... good luck with it. And I thought I was the only one with the cowboys and zombies idea! Duh! I just wrote an article about people having similar ideas. How funny! Keep me posted, bro.
Hey Daniel, thanks. My story takes place in the swamps and wetlands of Louisiana. I wanted to set it in 1880, but didn't want the typical "old west" feel of the Hollywood western (no offense Rik). The script is fast and fun and we already have our stars and director attached. Just working on the funding but wanted to try to keep it in La for the most part because of budget constraints. The sequel will definitely be shot across the country, tho. So New Mexico will probably be at the top of the list. Thanks guys... i will consider it for this one tho.
You should look into the area of St. Francisville It has a lot of history and historic sites/plantations you may be able to shoot at. They also have an old military ground where Cannon at Port Hudson- The Battle and Siege of Port - Hudson. Good luck
Wow, I visited there when I was in high school. Forgot about it. Good call. I'll have to check it out. I know there are still small towns in the state that have that old world look to them, just have to find them and work around it.
No offense taken. I'm not going for the feel of a Hollywood western either. I, too, have a stars attached (including one really big name for a three day cameo). When you mentioned towns with the 1880's look I thought of the standing sets I have scouted in New Mexico. When do you start shooting?
Excited for you Rik. I pray the best for you and you team. Congrats on your stars. We plan to shoot in the spring of 2013 if the funds come this fall or early winter.. We're pretty confident about getting them. I will have my peeps look into and consider NM. Not sure if the budget will allow distance of travel tho.
@J.Brian - My friend lives there and it just sounded like a great place that you should check out, but I agree I'm sure there are tons of different places in Louisiana. Good luck with finding something. Love to hear what you find :)
Try this one www.sanfranciscoplantation.org/history.asp or There's the Houmas House in Houma, LA its a smaller house. Or my personal favorite in Old Metairie, The Longue Vue House and Gardens. Just 20 minutes from downtown NO (equipped with air-conditioning). Don't know if you are filming in the summertime. But those plantation homes have NO AIR-CONDITIONING! Longue Vue wasn't built in the 1880s, but it sure looks like it. Good luck!

I am shooting a zombie western in November. New Mexico is the place. Several standing sets, great tax incentives, experienced crews.
