Good morning fellow 32'ers as a complete novice in your most wonderful of industrys would someone tell me please if a distribution deal should be struck before during or after filming? Thank you
From what I gather, whenever you can get one. I know some people can't get one till after the movie is in the theaters. Just go to a film festival and see great movies that don't get distribution. But if you can get attention to your project, then you can get distribution before it's even filmed. The indie I have, the producer got that first because of previous films she'd done. So if you get it, that's all that matters!
Ideally you want a deal in place before you shoot. But that's not realistic. Think about it from the distributors POV. Is it good business to buy the distribution rights before they see your movie? Sure, it's good business to buy the new film from Nick Cassavetes or The Duplass Brothers because they have a strong track record. So if you can strike a deal before you shoot then that's the best way to go.
Cheers Rick no point trying to negotiate on a sale or return basis then lol - Might be worth a try if I can get the attention of some great actors. Great advice fella
Thanks Lucy, you're a mine of information. As you know I'm at the early stages of development but in the short time that's passed I have gained loads of interest in people with extensive backgrounds in the roles you speak of. I am humbled that you guys are so genuinely interested in the project and follow your advice as its given. I am hoping so much that the gods remain with me and my team in getting this off the ground and seeing it right through to the end, Regards Joe
