On Jealousy Between Actors (and shoving that bitch of an emotion away!)

I'm sure you've watched a fellow actor play a part and think to yourself I can do so much better. Or heard an actor friend booking a part or getting an audition on something you'd like for yourself and think, I should be getting that. It is natural to be jealous initially, and we've all been through it (YES YOU HAVE TOO, ADMIT IT!) What isn't natural, and is a choice you make, is staying jealous and letting it get the best of you. And it's a very destructive thing: for others and especially for yourself. Jealousy is a negative emotion so powerful and so easy to succumb to. As an actor, you can often compare your progress to another and think, why am I not where that actor is? Jealousy preys on this thought and before you know it you're wishing ill of this other actor and convincing yourself that you deserve that part, not that actor, totally discarding how much work that actor has done or how far that actor has come to make those opportunities possible for him/her to have. Jealousy can also discourage you immensely, being stuck in so much negativity you start focusing on the things you've done that haven't worked, and before you know it you're wallowing in all your doubts. Haven't you ever noticed that being negative drains you of so much energy? On that thought of negativity, I was recently on an audition for How I Met Your Mother and after I had done my read, I ran into another actor in the elevator who was up for the same part and had already read as well. He asked me how my audition went and my immediate impulse was to tell him "It went great! best audition I ever had!" (which would have been a lie). But I made the choice to silence that negative impulse which is really an aim to intimidate and be competitive in an unhealthy way, and told myself, Zedrick don't be a dick and don't be cray. Be honest! So I told him the truth: "It was pretty good." He felt the same and we had a good laugh about how quick the audition was and how it was nothing like we expected. If I don't get the part I hope that actor does. I sensed he was pretty cool and I wish him well. And like myself, I'm sure he has worked long and hard enough to be at a point where he has the resources and the right people around him so that great opportunities, like auditioning for this amazing show, are opening up for him. What we should do instead is wish our other fellow actors well. When you see an actor friend of yours on whichever social media get an awesome audition or book a part however big or small, congratulate that actor, give a proverbial high five by liking that post or giving a celebratory comment. Yes that feeling of jealousy will try to creep in, but shove that little bitch away! You are so much better! This is already a hard enough industry for all of us and we're making it harder on each other by letting petty negative emotions like jealousy get the best of us. Be happy for your fellow actors' achievements and morph whatever envy you feel and make it a challenge for yourself instead to gather the resources you need to achieve that similar level of progress. Make sure your motivations are positive and celebrate with that actor, pray for them, wish them well. Negativity drains us of energy, but Positivity creates it! Be patient, be positive, and work hard because your time will come! Being on Stage32 alone already speaks volumes of how hard you work, being so eager to network, and how truly focused you are on the growth of your career. Thank you!

Props on fighting the urge and moving towards a more positive attitude. In an industry that is so competitive and vicious, it's cool that you want to go in the other direction. Hope you got the part.

Great post!

I think this is a very worthy (and logical) motive. I share your sentiments and I hope discussions like this flourish between actors in the future. I'm part of a national music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha, and it makes me proud to say that those of us who think positively like you do in this light have similarities with the heritage established by our founders. At the turn of the century (1900's) the brothers in Phi Mu Alpha were receiving recognition as destroyers of ill-will between musicians and building up a network and family of musical men who supported each other, rather than hold animosity. I hope that the artists here on Stage 32 help to build a similar legacy in the world of performing arts! :)

Zedrick, Thank you for sharing this post on my exploration of ENVY in our film industry. While you have told the story of envy through the journey of an actor, I think you have managed to capture the essence of this negative emotion in a much larger sense. Beautifully written and expressed. Needless to say that I one hundred percent agree with you. We are facing the epidemic of envy, if you can call it that, in a very acute way here in Bollywood and atleast I believe it is completely counter-productive and is derailing the very purpose of our being in the film community. I would be keen to share your post with my friends in Bolywood, do let me know if I have your permission to do so. Thank you. Have an exciting journey ahead and may the force be with you :-) Cheers! A.

Thank you so much for the responses everyone! Adam, they decided to go another direction so the part is not mine, but I'll get em next time :) Emma you're right, as artists we are so very achingly amusingly beautifully human in our tendencies and our choices. Best of luck to you as well! Anna, thank you for the kind words :) Emmett, that sounds fantastic! Ill have to give it a read sometime. C. Ryan, I love what your Fraternity stands for. It sounds like a place of genuine camaraderie and artistic growth. More power to you and the boys! Amit, share this post as you like! I'm glad that my words relate to you and the industry there. I knew that through raw honesty about how jealousy in this industry affects me is the way to influence others in a movement against negativity that is destructive to our selves and others.

simply put and true for all parts of life: try to be the best version of human you can be. If more people would use that as their moral guidance, the world would be a greater place. And I do think that more and more do actually leave the old mindsets of proto-human hierarchies behind and do not engage in those games of power struggles.

Amit Mehra

I agree Patrick. Fewer negative people but they manage to colour the sky dark.

We all have it in us to be better people. Best to be honest how dark we can get and know how very capable we are of getting back in the light where we shine brightest.
