Wondering what people have found to be the best solution to creating the best location sound when shooting on DSLR. The usual micro-budget considerations, and we're going with DSLR to get the most 'bang for buck' ratio - but the project needs exceptional sound as well or we've failed before we start... please let me know about your experiences :-)

Hey Francis, On my films I use the Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic and a Zoom4n audio recorder. I get great audio and I clean it up using Adobe Soundbooth because you still get some of the hiss in your audio. But those two items work wonders for my productions.
I agree with Moe. I have even used the Zoom without the shotgun and gotten good results.
Great, thanks, guys, for the input. I've been looking at the Zoom h4n as it looks like a very nice piece of kit for the money - at the moment we are weighing the costs benefits of purchase/kit hire and the Zoom is looking pretty good for our needs at the moment. Obviously, there are so many mic options out there it can get a bit overwhelming - good to get recommendations from people who have used the stuff!

I just finished directing a one-day short. We shot on a DSLR. Like you, I believe bad sound makes you dead in the water. In fact, I think it screams amateur. For all my department heads I had a 5-year professional minimum. Sound, make-up and scripty each had 15+ years on IMDB. I hired a sound mixer who brought amazing equipment and found a boom op on CL. It didn't cost that much for the day and I got perfect sound. This was double-system so my editor will line up the slates in post but that's well worth it. Short answer - find a few bucks, do it right with people who know what they're doing.
You're right... it's really the only way to go. What's the point of starting out with the idea that you are just going to make a mediocre effort... the results will never shine! Just a case of juggling the resources to make everything work!

Id just like too add recording sound with DSLR cameras should not be done by recorded the sound in camera it needs to be recorded seperatly so you get a clear sound...I wouldnt recomend that....
