Is it possible to perform a play without words? I have a story I just read, it is very short story (2-3 pages) and in my opinon turning this story into a play with words would do this story no justice. Any sugesstions?
I suppose a play about mimes, performed by mimes might work. Or a story about the deaf, using sign language might work, although the audience learning curve would be pretty stiff. Plays are about words, these words are always about emotional resolutions to problems of mankind. Stop goofing around with 2-3 page diddles, launch yourself into the big time by studying Greek drama and all the major plays after them and read the classic novels. Want a hint- got an idea for a play? Write it as a poem first. After that the play may write itself. Good luck.
There is A LOT of that type of work happening in Europe. There's a German writer named Peter Handke that has several plays without words. I saw an amazing play called La Giocanda in LA a few years back. It was Totally acted out like a silent film. Brilliant!
Thanks for everyone's comments, and advice. Just wanted to get a feel for the thought, not sure want direction I want to take this story. Plays are about words and emotions, this particular story I wanted to play the emotional side more so than the words, plus I think this would be a great way for me to get my feet wet, while working on a full length play. Thanks again and keep it coming!
To write a play without words, they're 5 simple key ingredients to use: Props, hand gestures, lots of action, fantastic actors & live animals suits or the real thing like totoe.
The concept is nothing really new. Andy Warhol made a movie about a man sleeping for 7-10 hours. Quirkiness does not equal badness/nor goodness...Beauty is in the eyes of the Beholder.
Hellen Keller's life is a play and a movie. There are an awful lot of successful dance companies.

My suggestion is to do it. What a wonderful challenge for everyone involved.
