Step one - avoid vanity presses. Step two - become popular enough that there's a potential audience built in for the book. (Unless you want to make a vanity film and self fund it, then by all means do so.)
Hi Rachel: Thanks for your reply. Nightengale Press is a traditional Independent Publisher, not a vanity press. I agree with you. I have been doing many many television, radio and journal interviews to raise interest.
According to their own website, they charge writers (and the website is writer oriented, rather than buyer oriented). If they charge, they're vanity.
Appreciate that but the book was published in late 2008 and although they did charge an up front fee for production, it was all returned through sales until repaid in full. I will keep that in mind though as I am now seeking a publisher for my newest book, "Waking Dreams; The Subtle Reality." A series of episodes of synchronicity I have experienced that offer proof that we are not alone and that life does not end when we die. It will give comfort to those who have experienced loss and take away the fear of death so that people can live in peace.....
Up front fee = vanity. Especially with the relative ease and number of options for the self publishing route (still not recommended for fiction), it doesn't inspire confidence. For a running list of some publishers, plus background checks on them: http://pred-ed.com/
